We all know what stress is… but do we really?

Over 1500 individuals of varying ages from every walk of life were asked this very question in a scientific survey. An overwhelming majority stated that stress resulted from time pressure. Coming in a strong second was work overload.

So children and older adults (65+) must not experience stress? Indeed, they have all the time in the world and are not overloaded with work! But let us ask you this.

  • How would you feel if you got to work to find that you have a new boss?

  • What if your daycare up and closed without any notice?

  • How about if someone at work constantly talked behind your back?

  • How would you feel if one of your parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease?

You might go N.U.T.S right?

Note that none of these situations involve time pressure or work overload, yet your brain and body would be stressed out and flood your system with stress hormones. Why? Because these situations involve Novelty, Unpredictability, a Threat to your sense of self and leave you with a poor Sense of control. N.U.T.S.
